About Alcoholism

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) exists on a spectrum, ranging from mild to severe, with different levels of impact on an individual's life. It encompasses various terms, including alcohol abuse, dependence, and the widely recognized term, alcoholism. Those with mild AUD may struggle with occasional loss of control or binge drinking episodes, while those with more severe AUD experience profound dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and an overwhelming compulsion to drink.

Alcohol addiction specifically refers to the moderate to severe range within the AUD spectrum. At this stage, individuals may experience intense cravings, physical dependence, and withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, nausea, sweating, and agitation when alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped. Without appropriate intervention, alcohol addiction can lead to irreversible health consequences, strained personal and professional relationships, and a significantly reduced quality of life. However, with the right support, including medical treatment, therapy, and lifestyle changes, recovery is possible, allowing individuals to regain control over their lives and achieve long-term sobriety.
